Ylva Johansson, the commissioner for home affairs for the group, has cautioned that the action might compromise security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Budapest offers a unique expedited visa process known as the national card system for specific foreign laborers. The program facilitates the process of applying for permanent residency for cardholders and permits foreigners to work in Hungary for a maximum of two years with less stringent conditions for obtaining a work permit. Only employees from Serbia and the Ukraine were previously qualified; however, six more nations, including Russia and Belarus, were added in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a\u00a0post\u00a0on X (former Twitter) on Thursday, Johansson criticized the move, claiming that\u00a0<em>\u201cRussia is a security threat\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and warning that the EU needs\u00a0<em>\u201cmore, not less vigilance\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in dealing with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cGiving potential Russian spies and saboteurs easy EU access would undermine the security of us all. Today in a letter I ask the Hungarian government to explain. If their easy access scheme is a risk, we will act,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;the commissioner warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the letter, which was addressed to Hungarian Interior Minister Sandor Pinter, Johansson went on to say that while EU member states have the right to issue long-term visas and residence permits unilaterally, they&nbsp;<em>\u201cshould consider potential security implications\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;for the entire bloc. She noted that the EU suspended the visa facilitation agreement with Russia shortly after the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict, and demanded that the Hungarian authorities explain the visa scheme so that Brussels could ascertain whether it is&nbsp;<em>\u201ccompatible with EU law.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change to the visa rules initially went largely unnoticed and only garnered attention after European People\u2019s Party\u2019s Chairman Manfred Weber criticized it in a letter to European Council President Charles Michel. Weber claimed the new scheme&nbsp;<em>\u201ccreates grave loopholes for espionage activities\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;and called on the EU Council to adopt measures to&nbsp;<em>\u201cprotect the integrity\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;of the Schengen area and prevent other EU members from taking similar initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spokesman for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Zoltan Kovacs, brushed off Weber\u2019s words as&nbsp;<em>\u201cabsurd and hypocritical\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/zoltanspox\/status\/1818331705377173943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Hungary\u2019s migration system was the&nbsp;<em>\u201cstrictest on the continent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hungary, which currently holds the six-month rotating presidency of the EU Council, has long criticized the bloc\u2019s approach to the Ukraine conflict and its sanctions policy towards Russia. Orban has long advocated for a ceasefire and negotiated settlement of the conflict. Last month, he embarked on what he called a Ukraine \u2018peace mission\u2019 aimed at finding a resolution to the hostilities.
