A \u201csocial justice\u201d nonprofit allegedly looked the other way while its workers abused children for eight years<\/strong><\/p>\n

Staff at a nonprofit organization responsible for housing thousands of underage migrants inflicted \u201csevere\u201d<\/em> sexual abuse upon the kids in their care, according to a lawsuit filed by the US Justice Department on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMultiple\u201d<\/em> employees at facilities operated by Southwest Key took part in the abuse, the Justice Department stated in a press release<\/a>. The \u201csevere or pervasive\u201d<\/em> abuse included \u201csexual contact and inappropriate touching, solicitation of sex acts, solicitation of nude photos, entreaties for inappropriate relationships and sexual comments,\u201d<\/em> the statement claimed.<\/p>\n

The sex crimes allegedly took place between 2015 and 2023, while Southwest Key earned billions of dollars in government contracts to house unaccompanied minors caught crossing the US-Mexico border illegally.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The company, which operates 29 shelters in Texas, Arizona, and California, \u201ctook insufficient action to prevent sexual harassment of the children in its care,\u201d<\/em> the statement continued. In some cases, it claimed, children were discouraged from reporting sexual harassment and threatened if they spoke up about the abuse.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit, filed in Texas, is separate from multiple criminal<\/a>\u00a0complaints<\/a> filed against Southwest Key employees since 2017. It accuses the company of violating the Fair Housing Act by allowing the abuse to take place, and seeks an undisclosed financial sum from the company, plus a court order requiring the firm to \u201ctake appropriate steps to prevent such harassment in the future.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Southwest Key describes itself as \u201cone of the largest, Latino-led nonprofit organizations in the United States,\u201d<\/em> with the company\u2019s website claiming that its staff work \u201con the frontline of social justice, youth advocacy, and immigration.\u201d<\/em> Southwest Key was founded in the late 1980s, and in the years covered in the lawsuit received money from the administrations of Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden.<\/p>\n

It is unclear how many children are currently housed in Southwest Key facilities, although the company has space for more than 6,300 kids at its network of shelters.\u00a0<\/p>\n
