Public discontent with the Netanyahu government has escalated after six Israeli hostages were found dead in Gaza<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tens\u00a0of thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Israel on Sunday, demanding an immediate ceasefire deal from the government after the bodies of six hostages were discovered in Gaza tunnels the day before.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s largest trade union has called for a nationwide strike on Monday to shut down the \u201centire Israeli economy,\u201d<\/em> with rights organizations urging a halt to pressure the government into signing a hostage-ceasefire deal.<\/p>\n

The Sunday demonstrations are said to be the largest since Israel launched its war on Hamas in response to the October 7 attack, which left around 1,200 Israelis dead and 200 taken hostage. Organizers described the rally as an \u201cendless sea of protesters,\u201d<\/em> estimating a crowd of 300,000 people in Tel Aviv and an additional 200,000 in other cities across the country.<\/p>\n

In Tel Aviv, protesters marched to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) headquarters, carrying six \u201csymbolic coffins\u201d<\/em> and chanting, \u201cWe won\u2019t abandon them\u201d<\/em> and \u201cNow! Now!\u201d<\/em> Many blamed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for failing to secure a deal to bring the hostages home safely.<\/p>\n

As tens of thousands protest in Tel Aviv to demand Netanyahu allow a prisoner exchange\/ceasefire, Israeli forces are responding with stun grenades.<\/p>\n

Frustration intensified when it was alleged that three of the six hostages killed were slated for release during the first phase of a ceasefire proposal discussed in July. A group of protesters erected a mock cemetery and held signs \u201cnamed after Benjamin Netanyahu.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNothing is worse than knowing they could have been saved,\u201d<\/em> one demonstrator told reporters, adding, \u201cSometimes it takes something so awful to shake people up and get them out into the streets.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Later that night, the protests turned violent as demonstrators blocked roads and burned tires. Police deployed water cannons and stun grenades to disperse the crowds. One policewoman was reportedly injured in the confrontation, and dozens were arrested.<\/p>\n

Israeli authorities are using water cannons in Tel Aviv in an attempt to disperse protesters calling for a hostage deal with Hamas.<\/p>\n

Israeli political commentator Sri Goldberg asserted that Netanyahu should be \u201cworried\u201d<\/em> about the widespread protests, explaining that the deaths of the hostages made it clear to many that \u201cthe policy of Israel\u2019s government is profoundly detrimental to Israelis\u2014and perhaps, in the case of the hostages, even lethal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Hamas claimed that the hostages were \u201cdeliberately\u201d<\/em> killed by the IDF.
