Google believes that marking such advertisements as \u201csponsored\u201d is enough to keep voters from being misled<\/strong><\/p>\n

US Vice President Kamala Harris has been using Google search advertisements that link to real news articles from legitimate sources, but with the headlines and descriptions altered to paint the Democratic presidential candidate in a more favorable way, according to an Axios report.<\/p>\n

The Harris campaign has been running such ads linking to stories by\u00a0\u201cnearly a dozen\u201d<\/em> news outlets, including CNN, AP, CBS, NPR, The Guardian, USA Today and others since at least August 3, Axios reported<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The ads apparently mimic real news results \u201cclosely enough\u201d<\/em> that they can potentially mislead users. Axios wrote that such techniques are\u00a0\u201ccommon practice,\u201d<\/em> but acknowledged that according to Google\u2019s advertizing transparency center, Harris\u2019s rival Donald Trump is not using such techniques in its online campaigning.<\/p>\n

Some of the outlets claimed they were blindsided and \u201cunaware\u201d<\/em> that their brands were being featured this way, according to Axios. A spokesperson for The Guardian said the company will be \u201creaching out to Google for more information about this practice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Google has insisted that the practice does not violate its rules, claiming that since the ads are labeled as \u201csponsored,\u201d<\/em> they are \u201ceasily distinguishable\u201d<\/em> from legitimate search results.<\/p>\n

However, the tech giant admitted that due to an alleged \u201ctechnical glitch\u201d<\/em> in Google\u2019s Ad Library, some of the ads \u201cappeared\u201d<\/em> to lack the necessary disclosures, Axios wrote.
